Why Kids Eye Tests Are So Important

Did you know that vision is responsible for around 80% of all learning during a child’s first 12 years?

A child’s eyes are constantly in use, whether they’re reading, writing, using a computer or playing sports. Poor vision can interfere with their ability to learn and meet their full potential, and can even compromise their physical, emotional and social development.

With the introduction of digital screens into the classroom, your child’s eyes are working harder than ever and may at risk of common eye conditions – in fact, 1 in 5 children in Australia suffer from an undetected vision problem.

Arm yourself with information

Be aware of the signs and symptoms of poor vision in children, as well as common vision problems that can occur.

When a child begins to lose interest or play up in the classroom, it’s not always obvious that it could be their eyes. Taking your child to a regular eye test is the best way to rule out any issues that could affect their learning, and even their ability to play ball during recess.

Aside from a thorough eye test with an optometrist, look out for these symptoms of vision problems in kids:

  • Red or watery eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Frequently rubbing eyes
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Tilting head noticeably
  • Covering or closing one eye
  • Difficulty learning to read
  • Holding a book very close when reading
  • Leaving out confusing words when reading
  • Squinting or sitting very close when watching television
  • Difficulty recognising familiar people in the distance
  • Complaints of headaches, blurred or double vision
