What Is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology is a way to correct mild to moderate short-sightedness while you sleep.
Also known as corneal refractive therapy (CRT), orthokeratology involves wearing custom contact lenses overnight, which gently reshape the cornea to temporarily modify or eliminate refractive error (primarily short-sightedness).
How does Ortho-K work?
Our optometrists take precise measurements of the shape of your eyes to create customised, rigid contact lenses.
These lenses are then worn overnight, and change the shape of the cornea – the dome-like window which focuses light onto the retina – which corrects focusing ability.
When the contact lenses are removed upon waking, you can enjoy clear vision throughout the day without the need to wear spectacles or contact lenses.
Is Ortho-K safe?
The cornea is highly elastic and will return to its original shape if orthokeratology lenses are not worn regularly. As such, Ortho-K is considered temporary and reversible.
As with regular contact lenses, there is a small risk of infection if the lenses are not handled safely and hygienically. This risk is greatly reduced by following the instructions on the appropriate cleaning and handling of Ortho-K lenses which our friendly team will discuss with you.
Is Ortho-K suitable for me?
Ortho-K may be suitable for people of all ages who have mild to moderate short-sightedness (myopia) and/or have difficulty wearing soft contact lenses for their required lifestyle activities.
Recent research also suggests Ortho-K may help slow down the increase in myopia development.
Orthokeratology is most commonly used for people who are short-sighted (myopic). It is ideal for sportspeople, swimmers or those who work in dusty or dirty environments.
